The Innocents

Statement
From creator & choreographer, Dr. Ali Duffy:
"I made a dance about gun violence affecting children. I cried a lot while making it and wish that it didn’t feel critical to speak to such a tragic, unnecessary phenomenon. But the dancers dove right into this difficult topic with their whole selves. And so many designers worked tirelessly to help realize my vision for the piece. I can’t describe how proud and in awe I am of the dancers, our wonderful collaborator, Kristy Kristinek, and of our work, The Innocents. Here are some images of the work and the poem that inspired it":
If I must die
Refaat Alareer
If I must die you must live
to tell my story
to sell my things
to buy a piece of cloth,
and some strings,
(make it white with a long tail)
so that a child, somewhere in Gaza
while looking heaven in the eye
awaiting his dad who left in a blaze—
and bid no one farewell
not even to his flesh
not even to himself—
sees the kite, my kite you made, flying up
above
and thinks for a moment an angel is there
bringing back love
If I must die
let it bring hope
let it be a tale
